JOINT LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION

By Senator LESNIAK and Assemblyman WISNIEWSKI

WHEREAS, The Senate and General Assembly of the State of Jersey join the Katyn Forest Massacre Memorial Committee of the New Jersey Division of the Polish American Congress in remembering the victims of the Katyn Forest Massacre and the terrorist attacks of September 11,2001; and,

WHEREAS, This solemn occasion will be marked and recognized during special memorial services at the Katyn Forest Massacre Memorial Monument in Jersey City on September 28,2008; and,

WHEREAS, In 1939, after Nazi Germany and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics invaded Poland, fifteen thousand Polish Army officers, intellectuals, and community leaders were taken against their will to the Soviet Union where they eventually perished; and,

WHEREAS, In addition, in April and May of 1940, four thousand five hundred Polish citizens were taken to the Katyn Forest near Smolensk where they were brutally murdered by the Soviet secret police in a heinous event that is known as the Katyn Forest Massacre; and,

WHEREAS, The many citizens and organizations involved in the Jersey City memorial services, through their remembrance of the Katyn Forest Massacre and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, will assist in emphasizing the importance of vigilance against tyranny and terrorism and in ensuring that such atrocities will never be committed again; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

That this Legislature hereby recalls with sadness the victims of the Katyn Forest Massacre and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and salutes the citizens and organizations involved in the memorial services in Jersey City on September 28,2008; and,

Be It Further Resolved, That a duly authenticated copy of this resolution be signed by the Senate President and the Assembly Speaker and attested by the Senate Secretary and the Assembly Clerk.
