File #F – 0049
Mr. K. Rupert Murdoch
Chairman & Chief Executive
News Corporation
1211 Avenue of the Americas
New York, N.Y., 10036
Dear Mr. Murdoch:
Re: Back to You
– November 14th Episode
We would like to call your attention
to the captioned episode which brings into question
the broadcast standards and program
practices of FOX Television.
What we found so troubling is the
attribution of a Polish identity to a character portrayed
as someone less than competent. We
believe any ethnic group would be offended by having
FOX portray it in such a derogatory
manner.
If the writers of Back to You
intended to negatively stereotype Polish Americans by such a
depiction, they have achieved their
objective. Even more serious, however, is their use
of this sitcom to introduce an
ideological and political agenda which you may wish to
review and determine if it conforms to
FOX broadcast standards and practices.
“Collaborating with the Nazis,” the
writers say, is in this character’s “Polish blood.”
We call this to your attention because
we are of the opinion you would not agree to have
FOX Television used as a vehicle for
the revival of a false accusation against the Polish
people which originated in World War
II.
Communist propaganda in the war
repeatedly attempted to brand the Polish Underground
Resistance (the largest and most
effective anti-Nazi resistance in all of German occupied
Europe) as Nazi collaborators because
of the grim determination of the Poles to fight the
Communists at the same time they were
fighting the Nazis.
The membership of the Polish American
Congress includes some of those individuals
who were forced to fight these two
enemies simultaneously. Some of these fighters
are survivors of German concentration
camps.
These members of ours have asked us to
arrange a meeting with you to ask you to have
Back to You cease depicting
this objectionable character as “Polish.” We believe their
accounts of their anti-Nazi activities
will prove interesting and educational to you.
We will contact your office shortly to
schedule such a meeting with you.
Sincerely yours,
FM:mo
